Since there were some people asking me to do a tutorial on how to draw wheel or chrome wheel, I thought about taking picture as I draw this rim below and share with you guys. First of all, I am still learning to draw rims and I still make a lot of mistakes. This is just a guide on how I draw my rim. Hope you will find something helpful in this walk through.
Here is some basic strategy you might want to use.
1. Draw what you see. Try to detect where on the rim is the darkest and lightest first before you start.
2. Try to get the shape of the rim and spokes close to perfect or perfect if you can.
3. Have your tools ready next to you.
4. Take your time. Take breaks. Don't rush. If you rush you will more likely to skip details and mess up the shape.
5. Try carefully to not smudge the paper with your hand.
6. When you need dark try to use 5B+ pencil, you don't want to draw so hard to get it dark with light pencils.
7. When you need white try to use erasers as a highlighter.
8. When you need details, plan it out with mechanical pencil or 2H+ pencil and then go for it.
9. Try to take pictures as you draw, you will find your own mistake such as ..out of shape..not dark enough .. too dark.. or missing details.
10. Be confident. Don't doubt.
Here are my tools.
-Brush: to brush off the eraser dust, I don't like using my hand because it will smudge the drawing.
-Normal eraser: to erase bigger area.
-Cotton stick: very useful to blend the shade.
-Eraser stick: to erase smaller area and bring out the highlight.
-Mechanical pencil: I use this to draw tiny lines, sometimes light shading.
-4H pencil: I use this for really light grey shades.
-2B pencil: for medium grey
-8B pencil: for dark grey
-8B lumograph pencil: for really dark black, good thing about it is doesn't shine after you shade.
